Sphagnum, cranberries and cotton grass: reading the bog from the planks

Cranes at dawn: April mornings on the Tyrelis boardwalk
Why we leave Šiauliai before sunrise in April, what cranes and black grouse sound like from the planks, and how to stand still long enough to hear them.
Boardwalk manners
- Stay on the planks, even where the moss looks firm.
- Walk in single file and give way where the boards widen.
- Pick nothing inside a reserve, and only ripe berries outside one.
- Write down what we heard as well as what we saw.
Why we write it down
We walk the raised-bog boardwalks near Šiauliai in every month of the year and write down what the bog was doing that day, so the next person on the planks knows what to listen for, what to wear and where not to step.
